Esther Pond, a devoted animal lover, chose a unique way to leave her mark on the world. Instead of requesting a memorial or headstone, she wished for her estate to be dedicated to caring for the animals she adored. Her nephew, Don, and his wife, Lenor, honored her wishes by creating a tribute in memory of Esther A. Pond and her beloved cats.
Esther’s story is one of simplicity, dedication, and profound compassion. Born to homesteading parents in the remote town of Mona, Montana, near Stevensville, she grew up amidst the rugged beauty of nature, surrounded by horses and rattlesnakes. She attended a country school with her four siblings – one brother and three sisters – and developed a deep passion for reading that stayed with her throughout her life.
As a young woman, Esther moved west to attend Whitman College. She lived a modest life as a bookkeeper, always maintaining her love for all living creatures. Known for her gentle nature, she would even rescue and release spiders found in her home. During World War II, she worked at a production plant, contributing to the war effort with the same quiet determination that defined her life. A baseball enthusiast, Esther’s favorite team was the Chicago Cubs, and referred to them as ‘the Cubbies’.
Esther cherished her time with Lenor and Don, enjoying meals at family restaurants like Frank’s Diner. Despite her petite stature, standing under five feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, she continued to drive well into her late 90s, demonstrating remarkable independence.
In her later years, Esther found peace in solitude, tending to her garden and growing African violets indoors. Cats held a special place in her heart, and her final days were spent in the company of Lenor and Don in Helena, Montana, surrounded by the animals she loved.
