rehoming your pet

At Spokane Humane Society, it is our mission to provide placement into loving homes for companion animals in need. And if we can help, we will do just so. Thank you for entrusting our team with your decision to surrender your pet to SHS.

surrendering your companion animal

We understand how hard it can be when faced with the decision to give up a beloved pet. Thank you for making the choice to surrender your animal to ensure that he or she remains safe and cared for. Because releasing an animal to SHS is a final decision, we suggest that you include all members of your immediate family or household in your decision, prior to deciding to rehome is the right decision. Keep in mind that many unwanted animal behaviors can be corrected, enabling pets to successfully remain in the family.

Spokane Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations and other community support to carry out our work. It costs us an average of almost $500 to care for each animal during his or her stay with us for veterinary care, food, and boarding. A surrender fee of $40 will help us to care for the thousands of animals we receive each year. Please let us know if you are not able to cover the fee, we will do what we can to help.

A valid Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI, or health certificate) is required for consideration if animals are being relocated or transferred across state lines from out of Washington State.

how to relinquish your pet

SHS cannot guarantee the intake of your animal. If after review, your companion animal can’t be helped through SHS, you will receive notification and be provided other resources that may help rehome your animal.

$40 surrender fee

step 1

Please complete the surrender form of your cat or dog. The more information you provide, the better our team can help. Surrender appointments are scheduled once the completed form of your pet’s medical and behavioral history is reviewed and approved.

step 2

After we receive your surrender questionnaire, an SHS team member will review and determine next steps. It may take up to 3 weeks for response due to a high volume of intake requests. We thank you for your kindness and patience.

step 3

If pre-approved, we will contact you to schedule an appointment, please respond as our volume is high, and further instructions to follow. Expect a thorough exam and discussion regarding how SHS can help either rehome or provide other resources.
