Tinsel and Ribbon’s Brave Battle Against Parvovirus

On December 14th, we welcomed two litters of puppies into our care. Upon arrival, we test every litter of puppies for parvovirus, which is a highly infectious disease that causes diarrhea and vomiting, among other symptoms. Parvovirus has a high mortality rate for puppies and unvaccinated dogs, and testing is a crucial part of reducing the spread of parvo throughout our shelter. However, there’s always a chance of a false negative. As the week went on, a few of the puppies started displaying symptoms of parvovirus, and despite the initial test, one puppy named Tinsel tested positive.

Our staff immediately jumped into action, moving the sick puppy to isolation and quarantining 16 others who were potentially exposed to the illness. The following morning, Tinsel’s brother, Ribbon, also tested positive for parvo. Both puppies were given the cutting-edge Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA), a lifesaving treatment which costs $1,400 for just six vials and is a critical first step in battling parvo.

Parvovirus requires round-the-clock care to administer IV antibiotics and fluids multiple times a day. We are incredibly grateful for our clinic staff who went above and beyond to ensure that the tiny puppies are safe and cared for. Additionally, we are immensely proud of our organization for working together during such a stressful time to ensure that all the quarantined puppies were cared for.

After a week of intense care, a visit to Pet Emergency Clinic, and lots of love, both Tinsel and Ribbon began to improve. We are overjoyed to share that by the end of the isolation period, both puppies made a full recovery and on January 2nd, Tinsel and Ribbon found their forever homes.

Our STAR (Special Treatment and Recovery) Fund makes these lifesaving treatments possible. Without it, many animals would face insurmountable odds. Every dollar replenishes this critical fund, ensuring we can provide intensive care, emergency treatment, and innovative solutions for animals in desperate need. Your gift isn’t just a donation-it’s a lifeline.
