Memorable Adoptions of 2024!

2024 was a year of change, resiliency, and growth here at Spokane Humane Society. Despite the challenges we’ve endured, we ended this year with record adoptions, heartwarming stories, and a whole lot of love for animals in need. In 2024, 1,506 companion animals found loving, forever homes! 25 of those were canines who had been in our care for months, if not years. We love to celebrate all these dogs specifically who were finally given the second chance they so deserve.

Many of these pups’ stories resonated with our community, and we are unbelievably grateful for people like you, who share our animals on social media or support SHS by volunteering and donating. You are a big reason these dogs finally found their companions! Among this list of long-timers are a few fan favorites, Copper, Oakley, Lucky, and Charlie, whose adoption successes we are eager to share with you!

Copper- Everyone remembers SHS’ favorite hound! Copper was a goofy, slightly aloof pup who marched to the beat of his own drum. He arrived in our care back in 2018 and was adopted and returned three times for a myriad of different reasons. It was heartbreaking to see him come back again and again. Luckily, Copper had a fan who helped him find his forever home. In July, a cat litter brand stopped by our shelter to film an advertisement, and the videographers who filmed the project happened to own a Coonhound with a significant Instagram following. They offered to make content for Copper to help him reach their hound community. Thanks to their incredible video, which gathered thousands of views, Copper found his forever home in August of 2024. He joined his hound brother and other fur sibling and has been thriving ever since. His adopter checks in with us from time to time, and we love seeing updates on how well he’s doing after many years of instability.

Oakley- Oakley was an easygoing, playful, and friendly four-year-old lab-mix who had been in and out of our care since he was nine months old. When he first arrived in 2021, he was severely under socialized and highly reactive. He was returned three times, often only after a matter of days. Finally, in October, Oakley found his person. His adopter had recently lost his dog and was looking for a new companion. He and Oakley bonded quickly, and he’s now living quite a luxurious life. Oakley now has his own pool and swanky doghouse! And don’t worry, we made sure he went home with his favorite purple Jolly Ball. We are so happy for Oakley, and hope that he lives the rest of his doggy days with lots of treats and cuddles!

Lucky- You may remember Lucky for his smiling face and love for food! Even if all our other dogs were being picky about their treats, we could always count on Lucky to chow down on anything. This cutie was surrendered back in 2022 with his mom, Sky. While Sky found her forever home a few months later, Lucky kept being overlooked. After two years, Lucky finally found his companion in December. His adopter emailed photos of him enjoying the snowy weather and curling up in his new home. Lucky is thriving, going on long walks through the neighborhood and spending time at the river. We are so excited for Lucky to finally have the love he deserves!

Charlie- Charlie was a sweet, older boy who struggled immensely in the shelter environment. Due to his kennel anxiety, we placed Charlie in a wonderful foster home, where he remained for over a year. His incredible foster mom truly made Charlie feel like a part of the family. She would take him with her everywhere she went to work on his socialization and help with his anxiety. Eventually, we were able to taper Charlie off his anxiety medications and help him transition into his forever home. The best part, Charlie went home with another SHS alum, Tiny Dancer, who was on our list of 2023 Memorable Adoptions! Good luck Charlie, we are so glad that you found the best forever home!

Our ability to share success stories like these is thanks to the incredible community support we receive. If you’re interested in being a hero hooman and taking a chance on one of our long-time residents, be sure to explore the adoption page of our website! We have so many pups who are equally deserving of a second chance. Beyond the stories of our long-time residents who stay in our care for behavioral reasons, we have many animals who are with us for extended stays to receive life-saving medical treatments. Stay tuned for our favorite STAR success stories from 2024!

If you adopted an animal from SHS, share an update by emailing annah@spokanehumanesociety.org. We would love to see how they’re doing!
