Furry Feature – Dr. Pepper

It’s been 700 days since Dr. Pepper felt the safety and comfort of a loving home, which lasted only four months. Before that, Pepper spent two years in our care after he was transferred from a rescue in Texas. Dr. Pepper is only five years old, meaning he’s spent almost his entire life in a shelter environment.

It’s easy to assume that Dr. Pepper must be a “bad” dog since he hasn’t been adopted, but anyone who meets him would say the opposite. He’s a staff and volunteer favorite due to his extroverted, goofy personality. He loves to run and fetch, especially with rubber squeaky toys. He goes to outreach events where he lets his social side shine, and everyone falls in love with him! Yet, no one ever gives him a real chance.

Like people, dogs are complicated too. While Dr. Pepper loves humans, he’s struggled to get along with other animals, often due to his dominant playstyle.

While Pepper needs to be the only animal in his forever home, he is comfortable wearing a muzzle which is a fantastic way to safely take him on walks in the neighborhood and have typical dog experiences.

Let’s make April Dr. Pepper’s last month at Spokane Humane Society! We are looking for his perfect companion—someone with no other animals and a fenced backyard who will give Pepper lots of time to run and play. Most importantly, his adopter needs to understand that it will take time for Dr. Pepper to adjust after almost four years of living in a shelter environment.

Dr. Pepper deserves to be seen as more than a long-term shelter dog, but as a sweet, social butterfly who loves to run and play. Help us give Dr. Pepper the second chance he undeniably deserves.
