Black cats are gorgeous creatures, most with honey-colored eyes and soft fur that turns into a silky rust tone in the sun. While all felines deserve love and attention, today is the day to marvel in the magic of how kind, gentle, goofy, and yes, sometimes clumsy they are.
While parents of our inky-coated charmers can attest to their lovable and social personalities, some remain wary of their nature. Old stories and superstitions once painted them as symbols of bad luck that have been translated into pop culture today.
- During the Middle Ages in Europe, black cats were seen as witches in disguise or their partner in crime (The Spruce Pets). This superstition is often portrayed in movies and TV series about witches, such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Hocus Pocus.
- During medieval times, black cats were seen as bad luck due to their fur color– they were believed to bring bad omens and death (The Spruce Pets). Even in today’s films and shows, black cats are often depicted as bringing misfortune when they cross paths.
We are here to debunk these outdated superstitions. In fact, Spoooookane loves our dark-coated felines. Here are some enchanting facts about black cats that you may not know (The Spruce Pets):
- Some parts of England believe that if you gift a black cat to a bride-to-be, it will bring them good luck in their marriage.
- If you spot a black cat in Japan, you will gain luck in finding love.
- Sailors in Europe believe that bringing a black cat will grant their crew a safe journey (and mice-free!).
- People in Scotland believe that prosperity will be on its way to you if you see a black cat on your porch or doorway.
- If you see a black cat in France, it means that you’re going to see something magical.
- Black cats are associated with good luck in parts of Asia and the UK.
And of course, our team believes that black cats will bring lots of heartwarming and enchanting memories with friends and family (which is definitely true).
