When It Rains, It Pours: Our STAR Fund Needs You

Special Treatment and Recovery
For the animals who need a fighting chance

Uni, in critical care...

Some weeks feel heavier than others — and this one has been one of those “when it rains, it pours” moments at Spokane Humane Society. Our STAR Fund (Special Treatment and Recovery Fund) — which provides lifesaving medical care for animals in crisis — is nearly depleted after a series of urgent, unexpected cases.

Each of these animals is deeply loved. Each one deserves the chance to heal. But together, they’ve brought more than $11,000 in critical veterinary costs in just a few days.

Uni: Fighting to Recover in Emergency Care

Uni came into our care with severe skin conditions and found comfort in a loving foster home. But just days ago, she became critically ill after possibly ingesting something a compost bin.

She was recently in emergency care, receiving radiographs, bloodwork, IV fluids, medications, and continuous monitoring. Her treatment has already surpassed $1,000, with another $3,400 anticipated as she continues to fight for recovery.

Uni’s foster family and our medical team are doing everything possible to give her the best chance — but her care costs are mounting quickly.

Two Puppies: Around-the-Clock Care

At the same time, two young puppies are fighting for their lives. Both are receiving 24-hour care and specialized treatment, including six vials of monoclonal therapy — at $220 each, totaling $1,320, not including additional veterinary expenses and medications.

We are grateful to be able to provide medical attention, but the costs of their care are placing a strain on our STAR Fund — a fund that exists solely for animals like these, who have nowhere else to turn.

Critter: A Sweet Husky Facing Cancer

And then there’s Critter — a gentle husky with a kind, loyal heart. Critter was recently diagnosed with cancer, and his care has already surpassed $1,000. His best chance at survival will likely mean amputation, with total costs expected to reach at least $6,000.

Even as we face the heartbreak of his diagnosis, we remain determined to fight for him. Critter deserves a chance at a pain-free, love-filled life — and with your help, he can have it.

When It Rains, It Pours

In total, these three cases represent over $11,000 in urgent care — in a single week. Our STAR Fund is what allows us to respond without hesitation when an animal’s life hangs in the balance.

But right now, it’s running dangerously low. When it rains, it pours — and we can’t weather this storm alone.

Every dollar given to the STAR Fund directly supports emergency medical treatment, diagnostics, and recovery for animals who need it most.
